I. FITTING GUIDE

THE NATURE OF A PROPER FIT
A Dornford shoe is crafted on a last engineered for both precision and comfort. Unlike ready-to-
wear footwear built around generic averages, our construction accounts for the natural asymmetry
of the human foot, the way leather yields under pressure, and the gradual break-in that transforms
a new shoe into one that is unmistakably yours.
A correct fit is snug at the heel, close through the waist of the shoe, and with enough room in the
toe box for your toes to lie flat without strain. The widest part of the shoe should align with the
widest part of your foot.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR SIZE
We recommend measuring your feet in the late afternoon — feet naturally expand throughout the
day and this gives you the most accurate reading for a comfortable, all-day fit.

– Stand on a flat, hard surface with a full sheet of paper beneath your foot.
– Trace the outline of your foot carefully, keeping the pen vertical.
– Measure the longest distance (heel to longest toe) and the widest distance across the ball.
– Repeat for both feet and use the larger measurement to determine your size.

Dornford sizing follows US conventions. If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up half a
size, particularly for our wider lasts. Our Fit Concierge team is available to advise on any sizing
questions before purchase.

WIDTH & VOLUME
Our shoes are offered in standard width (D) and wide width (EE) options across select styles. If
you have a notably high instep, a broad forefoot, or bunions, please contact us for last-specific
guidance before ordering.
THE BREAK-IN PERIOD
All Dornford shoes are Goodyear welted on solid leather insoles and require a break-in period of
2–4 weeks of regular wear. During this time:

– Some tightness at the toe box or across the vamp is normal and will ease.
– The leather insole will begin to form a footbed impression unique to your foot.
– Wearing with a thin dress sock for the first few wears can ease the process.
– Do not force-stretch the shoe or wear for extended periods before they are broken in.

Leather stretches approximately one quarter to one half size over the course of the break-in period.
Our Agra craftsmen build this into the construction — which is why a shoe that feels snug on day
one becomes the most comfortable in your wardrobe by the end of the month.
RETURNS & EXCHANGES
We offer complimentary exchanges on unworn pairs within 30 days of delivery. If a shoe does not
fit correctly after one wearing at home, please contact our Fit Concierge before returning and we
will advise the best resolution — whether that is an exchange of size, width, or last.

II. LEATHER GUIDE

WHY LEATHER QUALITY MATTERS
The leather used in a Dornford shoe is not merely an aesthetic choice — it is the foundation of the
shoe's durability, comfort, and character. We source exclusively from tanneries known for full-
grain and corrected-grain hides, processed using methods that preserve the hide's natural structure
and allow for deep conditioning over decades of wear.
We do not use bonded leather, suede split, or synthetic linings in our uppers. Every shoe that
leaves our Agra workshop is built to last a generation with proper care.

OUR LEATHERS
Box Calf — Our premier dress leather. Fine-grained, tight, and smooth with a subtle natural
sheen. Box calf polishes beautifully to a mirror finish and holds its structure across decades of
wear. Sourced from European tanneries.

Vachetta Calf — A natural, unfinished calf leather that patinas organically with exposure to light
and oils. It begins as a pale, matte surface and deepens richly over time. Each pair becomes entirely
individual.

Hand-Patina Leathers — Our signature finish. Applied by hand in our Agra workshop using
layered dyes and burnishing techniques refined over three generations. No two pairs are identical.
Colors include Cognac, Chestnut, British Tan, Forest Green, and Midnight Aubergine.

Suede — Full-grain suede from the reverse side of top-quality hides. We use suede only for non-
structured uppers and pair it exclusively with leather insoles and stacked leather heels.

LEATHER CARE — THE DAILY ROUTINE
Great leather care is not complicated, but it must be consistent. The following practices will
maintain the integrity of your Dornford shoes across years of wear:

– After each wearing, insert cedar shoe trees immediately to absorb moisture and hold shape.
– Wipe down the uppers with a dry or slightly damp horsehair cloth to remove dust and surface
grime.
– Allow shoes to rest for at least 24 hours between wearings.
– Never store shoes in plastic — use the cotton dust bags provided, or an open shelf.

CONDITIONING & POLISHING
Conditioning: Apply a good quality leather conditioner (we recommend Saphir Renovateur or
equivalent) every 4–6 weeks, or whenever the leather appears dry or tight. Apply sparingly with a
soft cloth in circular motions and allow to fully absorb before buffing.

Polishing: Use a wax-based cream polish matched to your shoe's color. Apply a thin layer with a
dauber brush, allow to dry for 5–10 minutes, then buff with a horsehair brush and finish with a
chamois cloth for high shine. Neutral polish can be used on patina leathers to preserve the gradient
effect.

Suede Care: Use a suede brush to restore the nap after wearing. Treat with a protective suede
spray before first wear and reapply monthly. Remove surface stains with a dedicated suede eraser.

WATER & WEATHER
Leather and moisture do not mix well when the leather is unprepared. Before wearing your shoes
in wet conditions, treat the uppers with a waterproofing wax or spray appropriate to your leather
type. If your shoes become thoroughly wet, remove them, stuff loosely with newspaper (not shoe
trees initially), and allow them to dry naturally away from any heat source. Condition once fully dry.
Salt stains from winter roads should be removed as quickly as possible with a damp cloth, followed
by conditioning once dry. Salt left on leather will cause permanent cracking over time.

III. LAST GUIDE

WHAT IS A LAST?
A last is the three-dimensional wooden or plastic form around which a shoe is constructed. It
determines everything about the fit, silhouette, and character of a finished shoe — the toe shape,
the pitch of the heel, the volume through the instep, and the alignment of the foot within the shoe.
At Dornford, our lasts have been developed and refined across three generations of shoemaking in
Agra. Each one reflects a careful balance between visual elegance and anatomical correctness —
shaped so that a shoe looks beautiful in the hand and feels right on the foot.
THE DORNFORD LAST FAMILY
The Rajpur — Our foundational last. A round toe with a medium-wide waist, neutral pitch, and
generous volume through the instep. The Rajpur accommodates a wide range of foot shapes
without compromise. This is the last we recommend for first-time Dornford buyers.
Recommended styles: Oxford, Derby, Loafer.

The Clifton — A refined English-influenced last with a slightly elongated oval toe, a close-cut
waist, and a modest elevated pitch of 8mm. Elegantly proportioned for formal dressing. Best suited
to narrower, lower-volume feet. Recommended styles: Cap-toe Oxford, Whole-cut, Monk Strap.

The Sher — A sleek, tapered last with an almond toe and a high pitch designed for slim, elegant
footwear. The Sher reads as the most fashion-forward of our lasts. Not recommended for wide or
high-volume feet. Recommended styles: Chelsea Boot, Loafer, Derby.

The Agra Wide — A modified version of the Rajpur on an EE wide platform. Designed for
customers with a broad forefoot or wide foot volume. Available on select Oxford and Derby
styles. Please contact our Fit Concierge to confirm availability by style.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LAST
The correct last for you depends on your foot shape, the formality of the shoe's intended use, and
your personal aesthetic preference. As a general principle:

– Wide or high-volume feet: Rajpur or Agra Wide
– Narrow or average-volume feet: Clifton or Sher
– Formal dress occasions: Clifton
– Everyday and smart-casual wear: Rajpur
– Fashion-forward and evening wear: Sher

If you are unsure which last is right for you, our Fit Concierge team is available via email at
fit@dornford.com. We can review your measurements and foot photographs and make a specific
recommendation before you place your order.
HOW THE LAST SHAPES THE SHOE'S LIFE
A Goodyear welted shoe can be resoled multiple times — but the last it was built on is what it will
always return to. Over time, the leather insole and upper conform to your individual foot, creating
a personalized impression that no other shoe can replicate. The last determines the starting point;
your foot shapes the destination.

This is why we encourage customers to invest in the correct last from the outset, and to build their
Dornford collection gradually, allowing each pair to become fully theirs before acquiring the next.
